Cothill House
Established in 1870, Cothill is recognised globally as one of the country’s leading boys’ boarding prep schools with an exceptional record of preparing boys for the top public schools.
A unique element of the School's offer is the time boys spend at the Château de Sauveterre, where they are immersed in the culture and language of the Gers in the south of France and gain an unforgettable life experience.
From the outset, boys are taught by subject specialists across the board. All Year 7 boys spend one whole term at the school’s Château near Toulouse, where there is immersion in all things French. General Studies is also now an integral part of the curriculum from year 5 upwards, giving the boys a broad perspective on politics and current affairs, ethical issues and the story of art since the classical era. Theme Weeks are a highlight of every year.
All boys are encouraged to take part in drama during their time at Cothill, and the opportunities to do so are plentiful. We have a partnership with a local rugby club who train and play on Sundays, and we provide other opportunities to practice a variety of sports year round. At Cothill we focus on the development of technical and physical skills, but social and psychological aspects such as teamwork, resilience, leadership and decision-making are also fostered and encouraged throughout the age groups. The variety of other activities proves to be too tempting. Climbing is in demand and is certainly demanding, while Table Tennis has produced great players. Fishermen are attracted to Fly Tying while Golf, Swimming, Art, Modelling, Science and Engineering have dedicated followers. Woodwork with “PC” has been central to the Cothill experience for as long as anyone can remember.
Admissions
Boys typically join Cothill in Years 4 and 5, although occasionally places are available in older yeargroups. Parents can register their son from birth. If all places are taken for the year, boys will be placedon a waiting list and parents will be kept informed of the likelihood of a place becoming available.References from previous schools will be taken up where appropriate. Around 16 months before a boy is due to start, parents will be contacted to invite them to bringtheir son to the school’s summer Open Day. Boys will then be invited to the annual assessmentmorning, typically in early November. The assessment morning and includes a variety of groupactivities and the chance for boys to talk to teachers one-to-one, before completing short reading, writing and maths tasks. Cothill is a gently selectiveschool.
